About Kids Enabled

Beth McGaw
Executive Director

Beth McGawBeth graduated with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, a M.Ed. in Adult Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and an Online Facilitator Certificate from Socrates Distance Learning. She is currently completing a nonprofit management certificate from Brookhaven College, Dallas, TX.

Beth’s past work experience includes positions within United Airlines, McDonnell Douglas and the Art Institute Online. In addition, she has taken an active role as a volunteer at her children’s schools over the past 19 years. After her youngest son was diagnosed with a variety of learning challenges, Beth co-founded the Atlanta based, Kids Enabled Magazine in 2006 and led the conversion to a nonprofit in 2008. Currently Beth serves as Executive Director of Kids Enabled and lives in Dallas, TX with her husband and younger son. She also has two older sons who attend college in Georgia.

Montie Stone
Managing Editor and Managing Director

Montie StoneMontie Stone has a BA in English from the University of South Carolina and a T5 in secondary English education. After leaving her senior English teaching position in DeKalb County to raise her 2 children, she became very involved in her community as a volunteer at church, school and the Junior League of DeKalb. She now enjoys being a soccer mom, alongside her husband, Todd, as well as a preschool teacher, freelance writer and editor.

Montie joined the Kids Enabled team in 2006 shortly after her son was diagnosed with learning differences. What began as a position as contributing editor has evolved into not only serving as managing director, but also being a staunch advocate for the learning differences community as a whole.

Maggie Parry
Senior Editor

Maggie ParryMaggie Parry is a writer and editor living in Atlanta. She received her BA in English and writing from Agnes Scott College and her MA in the same from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. She is the parent of a son with learning differences.

 

 

 

Caroline Nichols
Media Director

Caroline NicholsA native Atlantan, Caroline Nichols earned her BFA in Scientific Illustration from the University of Georgia. She started her career at Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc. in photography and later lent her talents to the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and the High Museum of Ar t, among others.

Caroline joined the Kids Enabled staff in 2007 as a graphic designer for the print publication. In her current role as Media Director, she oversees art direction for the company and lends her expertise in public relations, event planning, and social media as well.

Caroline lives in Decatur with her husband, Ethan, and their two children. She is an active volunteer at her children’s schools and for the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta.

Merrell Pair

Merrell PairMerrell Pair, a native Atlantan, earned her BS in Financial Management from Clemson University. After working as an accountant with Georgia Power, she decided to stay at home to raise her 3 children. As it is with most moms, the term “at home” is quite misleading. She filled her years with teaching in dance, Gymboree and in her children’s school. She enjoys volunteering at church, school and in her community.

Her background in finance and working with children makes her invaluable as the Kids Enabled advertising representative. She looks forward to years of connecting the learning differences community with the resources they need.

Eric Smith
Advertising Sales

Eric SmithEric received his Bachelor of Science Degree graduating Summa Cum Laude from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where he was named Marketing Student of the Year in 1981. Since then, Eric has benefitted from 30 years of high-impact training, experience, and leadership at Burroughs Corporation, Compaq Computer Corporation and Hewlett Packard. In 2010, Eric made a bold life decision to change his career and has become active in the Metro Atlanta Non-Profit community. He has successfully completed three grant writing courses from the University of Georgia Professional & Personal Development at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

Eric lives happily in Milton Georgia with his wife Laurie and two children Amanda (20) and Ryan (15). He is a member and regularly serves at Northpoint Community Church, Atlanta Writer’s Club, and the Boy Scouts of America. He is energized by his new career opportunity as Director of Development, where he looks forward to giving back the love and great blessings that have been bestowed to him.

Joan K. Teach, Ph.D.
President

Joan K. TeachJoan K. Teach, Ph.D is the Director of the Community Resource Center in Atlanta that provides families and adults with information enabling them to understand the strategies necessary to manage the impact of ADHD in their lives. A special educator and former director of an educational center, her focus is matching approach with need. A contributor to the CHADD Educators Manual, and past national board member of both CHADD and LDA, she facilitates the workgroup: Together We Make a Difference, which joins CHADD-GA, LDA-GA and Kids Enabled, to provide informational workshops, conferences as well as Adult and Family support groups for our ADHD/LD population. Her passion is designing alternative techniques to learning, especially gaming and simulation.

Stephen A. McGaw
Vice President

Stephen McGawSteve McGaw is senior vice president of Corporate Strategy for AT&T, leading cross-functional teams to develop, analyze and present long-term strategies for AT&T.

Prior to this role, Steve served as SVP of Supply Chain Management for AT&T Mobility & AT&T Fleet Operations with responsibility for all direct supply chain operations, including the procurement of over $15B of products and services annually and the receipt, warehousing and distribution of these products for all wireless operations. Fleet operations included management of the enterprise-wide policy, strategy and operating effectiveness for all of AT&T’s 90,000+ vehicles in 50 states and 23 countries.

Before that, Steve served as senior vice president of Corporate Development and was instrumental in Cingular’s valuation, analysis and negotiation of its acquisition of AT&T Wireless.

During his career, he has held a variety of positions at SBC and AT&T Bell Labs, including business marketing, sales, international development and technology planning positions. His education includes an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, Masters of Science in Computer Science at Northwestern University, and a BS in Industrial Engineering at Purdue University. Steve is married and has three children.

Angéle Hawkins
Treasurer

Angéle HawkinsAngèle earned her Master of Science in Community Counseling,at Georgia State University and her Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Administration, at Vanderbilt University

Angèle offers her leadership talents to guide New Hope’s financial growth and stability. Angèle describes herself as a "retired" business person because she developed, launched, and served as part of the leadership team of a successful company for several years. Angèle will apply her wealth of experience and business acumen to develop business concepts and plans for New Hope clients to ensure economic stability offered by the sustainable employment that can be attained by successfully completing New Hope's programs.

Gailynn Gluth

Secretary

Gailynn GluthFounder and ceo Gailynn Gluth was inspired to launch Wynsum Arts through her experience raising her 10 year-old son who has Asperger's Syndrome. Gailynn dedicated her efforts to starting Wynsum Arts after a successful career as director at Starbucks Coffee Company, a fortune 100 company. Her training, consulting and executive level project management experience has provided her with extensive opportunities for working with personnel and consumers, as firsthand experience with project management and taking concepts to global implementation. She is actively involved in the special needs, developmental disabilities and autism communities.

Jana Eplan

Jana EplanJana Eplan, a native Atlantan, graduated from The University of Michigan with a B.A. In English Literature. She owned a specialty chocolate company for 10 years, Chocolates UnLtd., selling primarily corporate gifts in quality packaging.

Jana has three children, two of whom have been diagnosed with special needs, which brought her to Kids Enabled. Prior to that she served on the founding board of Hands On Atlanta, The Black/Jewish Coalition, and chaired the Alumni Advisory Committee at Paideia School, which she attended.

Eve Hawkins

Eve HawkinsEve received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Art History from Vanderbilt University. She went on to receive her Juris Doctor from New York Law School. Eve currently practices as a civil litigation attorney in the Atlanta area while working part time as a cognitive skills trainer for children and adults with learning differences. Her part time work has drawn her to Kids Enabled and fueled her passion to make a difference in the learning community.

Gayle Born, M.Ed.

Gayle BornGayle is a partner at Parkaire Consultants, Inc as an educational consultant and learning specialist. Gayle has served as an educator in the Greater Atlanta area for over thirty years. Her experience has been diverse; as a classroom teacher, resource room teacher, special reading/language arts teacher and principal of The Howard School, North Campus in Roswell from 1986 to 1999. Gayle has worked with many families to find appropriate alternative school placement for over fifteen years. She also advocates for children with special needs by going into the school to help develop IEP’s and 504 Plans for students. Gayle leads Camp Friendship a group for students ages 5-12 to help develop and maintain better social skills.

Shahnoor S. DharamsiShahnoor S. Dharamsi is a Therapist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She brings over 5 years of experience working with children ranging from birth to 18 with a variety of diagnoses. Her specialties include aquatic and feeding therapy. She is responsible for evaluating, planning and executing treatment sessions. Additionally, she organizes and manages the Fun and Fitness Summer Camp. Shahnoor also works with Clay White, to provide children with sensory activities to enhance daily-living skills. She holds BS and MS degrees in Occupational Therapy from Brenau University. She holds a Certificate - Management Auditing from the London School of Economics.


Carol Ann Brannon, MS., RD, LD

Shahnoor S. DharamsiCarol Ann Brannon, MS, RD/LD is a Nutrition Expert with over 20 years of experience in healthcare, education, individual counseling, and corporate wellness. She has a B.S. in Dietetics and a M.S. in Nutrition Education. Carol Ann is a Registered, Licensed Dietitian and holds a Certificate in Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management. Her clients achieve success with her personal enthusiasm, caring, empathetic, and expert guidance. In addition to her clients, Carol Ann is also an instructor in the Culinary Arts Program at the Art Institute of Atlanta and author of several home-study courses and articles for health professionals. On a personal note, being Mom to four active children is her greatest joy and challenge. Carol Ann is fully able to understand the time demands and responsibilities of working parents. She uniquely understands children and teens.

Amy ShermanAmy, a Speech-Language Pathologist licensed in Georgia, has a private practice, Atlanta Speech Therapy and Training. Her specialty is treating articulation, oral-motor, and language problems, including apraxia, and she has training in PROMPT. Amy takes /advanced/langs/en.js" type="text/javascript"> pride in providing personalized, one-on-one therapy with a whole-child approach. She serves the Alpharetta and Dunwoody areas. Amy is passionate about helping children and is an avid Kids Enabled supporter and contributor.



Laurie Smith

Laurie SmithLaurie Smith has leveraged her 18 years of Human Resources and Training experience to help her navigate the waters of IEPs, SSTs, and 504’s.  She is married and very proud of her two children, Amanda and Ryan.  Although they share the same biological roots, their educational journeys have been anything but identical.  Throughout this experience, Laurie has learned how to effectively advocate for her children, attended conferences and lectures to better understand her children’s learning differences, and developed a passion for helping other parents. 

Laurie is also actively involved in helping prematur e babies and their parents through an organization called Threads of Love. She was actively involved in the International Dyslexia Association- Georgia Branch fun run which was held in October to raise funds a nd awareness of the resources available to parents, teachers, and professionals through the IDA. She also volunteers at her church and daughter’s high school. She says that she is honored to be joining the board and looks forward the exciting journey that lies ahead.

Wendy Williams, M.A.

Wendy WilliamsWendy Williams, M.A., has been an influential part in assisting families throughout the metro-Atlanta area by helping students with their educational options, as well as time management skills, academic organization and study skills since 1997. Wendy worked as a college counselor at the Ben Franklin Academy, a private school in Atlanta, Georgia where she guided hundreds of students and their parents in the college selection process. In addition, she has done admissions consulting for both the precollege and graduate sectors of Kaplan, Inc. Wendy’s counseling background helps to demystify the process by implementing structure, guidance and a calm environment that helps the student focus on his interests, abilities, and ultimately school choices.

Wendy graduated from Kennesaw State University with a BS in Psychology and received a master’s degree in Professional Psychology, specializing in Counseling from Argosy University. She is also an alumni member of the Chi-Omega Fraternity. Wendy’s educational background and hands-on experience allows her to focus on the student’s academic interests as well as the student’s social needs. Her chosen career has allowed her to work with wonderful families who care about their student’s future. 

Elaine Taylor-Klaus

Elaine Taylor-KlausElaine Taylor-Klaus is the founder of Touchstone Coaching and co-founder of ImpactADHD™, the social network for parents raising kids with ADHD. She received her CPCC from the Coaches Training Institute (CTI), is certified by the International Coach Federation and is a graduate of CTI's International Co-Active Leadership Program. Elaine also has certifications in ADHD and ScreamFree parenting coaching. Prior to coaching, Elaine served two terms on Georgia's Governor's Council for Maternal and Infant Health, taught pregnancy, postpartum and couple’s Labor & Delivery yoga classes and founded many programs and organizations, many of which remain today. Elaine is a graduate of the CORO Fellows Program and Wesleyan University in CT.

Elaine has a passion for working with parents of complex kids. She has a reputation for rigorous honesty, guiding people to their own truth with the utmost respect and acceptance. She uses coaching to support parents and help them make the best decisions for themselves and their families. The parent of three children with complex needs, Elaine manages a gluten-free/dairy free ADHD household of 5.
